A Book Review: The Pain Survival Guide How to Reclaim Your Life
May 24, 2009 by Laurance Thompson
When I heard that Dennis Turk, PhD wrote a book for patients with chronic pain, I knew it had to be good, and I was right. Dr. Turk has been a pioneer in the field of pain management and has written extensively for the medical and psychological community. The recommendations in this book are based on solid research and his own clinical experience working with thousands of patients.
The nice thing about The Pain Survival Guide: How to Reclaim Your Life is that it is in a 10-step program format that is easy to follow and motivational. It shows how gradual changes can lead to lasting improvement. For example, this informative book will teach you about pacing your activity so you build strength without overdoing it. You will also learn relaxation strategies designed for pain management, along with strategies for combating negative thinking and improving mood to reduce pain. It is one of the best books I have read about how to address the emotional distress that results from chronic pain.
